Here is a little picture of the surf at Llandudno from yesterday.
The surf was about 1.5 feet on the sets, but it was nice to get some exercise and get wet.

After Clive lost his fancy new fin, on his second or third surf, he was pretty gutted. He was touting the fins as “the best fins ever” and was gutted when he lost it at Off The Wall.
I bumped into Clive at Llandudno yesterday and managed to give him back the fin, and take a cheesy photograph.

Sorry for the cheesy caption – it had to be done!

The surf today isn’t ideal, but I have been bursting to get in the water after what must be a 2 week dry spell. The swell seems fine, but the wind and swell direction seems to be messing everything up.
I zipped over to Thermo’s – Nothing. Then Off The Wall – Nothing. Nothing all the way to Camps Bay. But in the corner of my eye I caught a wave at Glenn beach, so I turned around a jumped in.
As I was getting changed I saw some fins on a board that looked like the one I found at Off The Wall. So I asked the guy if he had lost a fin, and he had. So Clive will be re-united with his (nearly new apparently) fin in time for Christmas!

The surf over the last couple of days has been pretty flat, which is why the reports and pictures have not been forthcoming. But the day before yesterday (Wednesday) was special. I had planned to go surfing that morning, because of a tip the guys at Surf Zone in Cape Town gave me, but when I got there in the morning, the swell had not arrived. When I went back later in the day, the swell had jacked and it was going off, but I didn’t have the time to jump in – gutted.
Since the swell has been good, but the wind hasn’t been great, leaving Greenpoint a little bumpy.
So the moral of the story is, when you are driving in South Africa always make sure you have a decent spare wheel, jack and spanner in you car. I was driving home last night and a log was rolling down the road. Rolling log plus the side of your wheel leaves you with what I had in the picture below. Unfortunately for me though, I didn’t have a wheel spanner so I had to wait for a friend to come and help out.

Midday (1200) – Off The Wall, Cape Town.
I’m sorry to say, the picture I took of the surf somehow ended up being a picture of my feet, which is pretty confusing to me seeming as I was pointing it to the surf, but thats the fact!
The Wind:
The wind today has a fair amount of west in it, which makes most of the spots I frequent a little bumpy. But I must say the I don’t think the wind was strong enough to really mess anything up that badly. I am guessing gusts are about 30k’s.
The Swell:
Unfortunately the swell is small, leaving only Llandudno a suitable option for most Capetonians on this gorgeously sunny Monday.
I’ll try and get a picture tomorrow, which is probably when I will be hitting the surf.
Posting has been quite the last few days due to the strong South Easterly winds, otherwise known as the Cape Doctor. The wind was gusting up to 60k/h over the weekend and the first half of the week, making loosing your flip flops in the wind a real concern.
The wind reeked havoc around the city, leaving lots of dust and rubbish everywhere, but it blows the nasty cold and flu bugs away for summer.
Coincidentally, it also blows the warm surface water away (on the Atlantic side of Cape Town) which is why False Bay is warmer than the Atlantic side in summer.
Just a quick surf check. The swell has increased, so that swell everyone has been talking about might be on its way for tomorrow! It was super misty, so the photo didn’t come out (sorry fans), and the tide was really high and there was tonnes of backwash from the wall. Dire conditions if you ask me. Lets hope that is all clears up for the weekend. Have a good one.
There is no surf today, and it was really low tide. Seeming as the water was so still and clear I took a walk over the rocks and took some pictures, which I will be adding to the description of the spot.
You can see below the rocks that you have to swim over at high tide. You can just about see there is a thin channel in the pool that looks like an “L”, which is impossible to aim for in any occasion.

Below are the rocks that lie in front of the take off spot. Luckily there is normally a current that sweeps in front of the wall which leaves you in the channel. Just hope that you don’t snag some kelp or hit a rock on the way.

As you can see the swell is tiny today, Llandudno will most likely have a wave today.

When I was taking a walk over the rocks at low tide at off the wall (see the latest post), I found this fin. If it’s yours, or if you have the other two fins, email me and it will be returned.
It is the left fin, if you are looking at the bottom of the board with the nose pointing away from you, and is an FCS fin. The plugs look a little bit scratched, nothing major and the fin itself is fine.
