Learning to surf in Cape Town is fairly straight forward if you know where to go. Some of the surf spots are not beginner friendly, but there are a couple that are.
The two best places to go for lessons or renting equipment is Muizenburg and Big Bay. These two places are quite far away from each other, so depending on where you stay just head to the closest one.
Muizenburg is in False Bay which means it will be a little warmer than Big Bay, but is also more sharky. They do have shark spotters on the beach at Muizenburg and if they spot something they put up flags and blast a horn.
This is a map of where Big Bay and Muizenburg are. The top pin is Big Bay and the bottom pin it Muizenburg.

Here are the contact details for two places who can organise board/wetsuit hire and lessons if you want to be organised and plan in advance. I would recommend planning a lesson in advance, but hiring equipment can be done on the day. Remember to take something you can leave with them as a deposit, like an ID or car keys.
