Misty Surf in Cape Town

Friday, September 29th, 2006

This morning at off the wall was onshore and misty. The sets were taking about 10 minutes to go through and the tide was being weird. Most of the waves were really lame, but one okay one came through.

I also drove over to Thermopylae, to see if any of the sets were breaking big enough, but they were not.

There was a big mist over cape town this morning that is still lingering around. The mist has cleared from the city bowl, but is still lingering over the Atlantic coast, causing onshore conditions. As soon as the sun comes out the wind should switch offshore again. See this panorama picture I took at Greenpoint Stadium. You can see the mist looming over the sea, and the clear skies over Cape Town city bowl. Lets hope it clears before everyone gets off work!

Off the Wall in the afternoon

Friday, September 29th, 2006

I headed back to Off The Wall, thinking that the rising tide would have helped the drastic situation but I missed it! I was about an hour too late because the tide had already risen just a little bit too much. The other problem was that the tide was still coming in!
I jumped in regardless, and had a couple of good waves. The waves deteriorated and the wait between sets was about 15 minutes!

Small and Sucking dry over the rocks

Friday, September 29th, 2006

After I came out of the meeting, I had to check the surf. The tide was a bit low, and Off the Wall was sucking dry and exposing that rock we all try to avoid! More photos to come from the afternoon surf check and session!

Sunny in Cape Town

Friday, September 29th, 2006

I had a meeting yesterday morning, so I couldn’t check the surf first thing in the morning but I took this snap after I came out of my meeting.
Normally when it is this sunny, and when there is no wind, there tends to be no swell. So we’ll see what happened in a second.

Off The Wall – Mouille Point – Cape Town

Wednesday, September 20th, 2006

Off the wall this morning at 0900; I walked up the path to find about 6 mazzive set waves that completely maxed out off the wall. This was the last wave in the set, the only one that didn’t run too fast. Low tide was making the waves very hollow and the rocks very exposed! I think I’ll jump in after lunch when the tide is a bit higher. See you there.Off The Wall - I'm going for a surf!

Surf World Record Attempt 2006 - Muizenburg, Cape Town

Last weekend (September 16-17th), at Muizenburg beach, the world record for the most surfers on one wave was broken.
The previous record of 44, that was set in Ireland was broken last weekend when 73 surfers manages to stay up on the wave for more than 5 seconds.
Proceed from the event are destined to go to the shark spotters fund to help keep surfers and bathers safe from shark attacks.
The event was held to build awareness of shark attacks in false bay and to try and help the problem in the future with sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions.

Sunday Surf Session at Off The Wall – Cape Town

Sunday, September 17th, 2006

Today is was Sunday and the wind was a little strong, coming from the south/ or south west. I was going to check out Llandudno, or Sandy Bay, but I know Off The Wall works well on a South Westerly. Lions Head protects most of Green Point from that mean ass South Westerly, which made for glassy conditions at Off The Wall.
The wave ranged from chest high to a few feet over head, and the tide was quite high. As you can see there were a couple of good ones, I was a bit late catching this picture – the wave was a good one.
I managed a few good waves and a couple of good turns. I was really impressed by the guys friendliness in the water, really chilled out Sunday surf.

Thermo’s and Off The Wall This Morning

Tuesday, September 12th, 2006

September 12th, 2006
The weather this morning in Cape Town was a little over cast and the wind was howling all night long. Off the wall was nice and glassy but a bit too small to jump in today. Looking forward to later in the week!

Thermopylae – Cape Town

Monday, September 11th, 2006

This morning I also managed to get a sneeky peek at Thermo’s. A great spot that can break pretty big. Mid out for the kelp and the bumpy waves when the wind picks up. Its a little big wave spot, so you can ride it in most boards. No surf today though! It needs to be at least twice as big as this to break properly.
